What makes Chick-fil-A’s classic chicken sandwiches so yummy and addicting?  Some may say it’s their perfect crispy coating, others agree on their delicious sauces but, the truth is that all of these sandwich ingredients contain one ingredient that makes you want to come back for more. This ingredient is monosodium glutamate, more commonly known as MSG.

How dangerous is MSG ?

MSG is a flavor enhancer that has been used in processed foods in America since after World War II. However, it’s one of the most dangerous food additives.

Even the FDA states:

“Studies have shown that the body uses glutamate, an amino acid, as a nerve impulse transmitter in the brain and that there are glutamate-responsive tissues in other parts of the body, as well.

Abnormal function of glutamate receptors has been linked with certain neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s chorea. Injections of glutamate in laboratory animals have resulted in damage to nerve cells in the brain.”

Science confirms that increased glutamate activity in your brain can cause harm and it can can raise blood levels of glutamate. In one study, a huge dose of MSG increased blood levels by 556%

Additionally, a recent study found that high levels of MSG also caused severe effects in fruit flies, leading to premature death in a significant number of them.

Does Chick-fil-A really need all these toxic ingredients to make their sandwiches??? Of course not. But most of these ingredients make their food addicting so we keep coming back for more.

According to Chick-fil-A’s own menu posted on their website, their classic chicken sandwiches are made with all the following chemicals and ingredients:

  • monosodium glutamate
    • soybean oil
    • sodium aluminum phosphate
    • dimethylpolysiloxane (an anti-foaming chemical)
    • ammonium sulfate
    • soy lecithin
    • sodium benzoate
    • polysorbate 80
    • yellow 5
    • blue 1
    • potassium sorbate

Lets Take a Look at Some of These Absolutely Toxic Ingredients

Calcium Chloride – Can pose some serious health dangers. If ingested, it  can lead to burns in the mouth and throat, stomach pain, low blood pressure, and more.

Potassium Sorbate – Potassium sorbate (E202) is a preservative used in a wide range of foods including yogurt, cheese, wine, dips, pickles, dried meats, soft drinks. A 2002 study published in “Toxicity in Vitro” sites that when human blood cells were exposed to potassium sorbate they underwent mutation and damage to DNA.

Polysorbate 80 – An emulsifier which has been associated with weight gain, inflammation and digestive problems

 Yellow 5 – It has been associated with behavioral issues that include irritability, restlessness, depression. More than 15 studies on Yellow 5 concluded that artificial food dyes do increase hyperactivity in children

Blue 1 – One of the worst artificial dyes because it has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier. Blue 1 not only causes our children to be overactive and hyper, but it can cause stunted growth, behavioral and learning problems.
