The Surprising Way to Keep Avocados Fresh That Most People Don't Know About

Avocados are a great source of healthy raw fat, which is missing in many people today and can actually help with weight loss

They contain  around 20 essential nutrients which include:

  • Fiber
  • Potassium (more than twice the amount found in a banana)
  • Vitamin E
  • B-vitamins
  • Folic acid
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Sodium
  • Iron
  • Boron

Avocados are packed with cancer-fighting carotenoids. In 2010, the California Avocado Commission issued guidelines for getting the most out of your avocado by peeling it the right way.

“California-grown avocados contain 11 carotenoids. According to USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, avocados contain a complex package of phytonutrients, including carotenoids that may provide numerous health benefits.

Carotenoids appear to protect humans against certain cancers, heart disease, and age-related macular degeneration. The UCLA research showed that in California avocados, the greatest concentration of beneficial carotenoids is in the dark green fruit of the avocado closest to the peel.”

In addition, avocados boost your body’s ability to absorb fat-soluble nutrients from other fruits and vegetables, such as alpha and beta-carotene and lutein. Avocados possess  antibacterial and antifungal properties  that help to support a healthy immune system.  Avocados are a wonderful source of the amino acid lecithin, which prevents liver overload, helps to balance weight, and boosts brain functions.

The Surprising Way to Keep Avocados Fresh That Most People Don’t Know About

As we all know, the cut surface of an avocado quickly turns brown. Avocados contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, which when in contact with oxygen in the air, causes avocados to turn brown. This makes it hard to store it in the refrigerator for a long time.

I have found that the best way to keep a cut avocado fresh is to place it in an airtight container with a piece of cut up red onion.

– Just cut a red onion into  large chunks and place the pieces  in your container.

– Add the avocado half on top. Make sure the skin touches the onion chunks.

– The gasses released from the red onion prevent oxidation.

With this simple tip on keeping a cut avocado fresh in the refrigerator, you can enjoy the remainder for up to 5 days, maybe a full week.
