These air fryer sweet potato fries are perfectly crispy and fluffy and take just 10 minutes to cook! They are a healthy way to enjoy fries with a fraction of the fat!
As much as I love deep-fried and perfectly seasoned sweet potato fries, the convenience and healthier option of using an air fryer to make them has been a game-changer.
Like air fryer French fries or air fryer smashed potatoes, The potatoes are super crispy on the outside while still being super fluffy in the middle, and they cook up in a fraction of the time.
Why you’ll love this recipe
- Healthy and low fat. Traditional sweet potato fries are deep-fried and contain tons of saturated fat. By air frying the sweet potatoes, you only use a fraction of the oil.
- Quick and easy. Unlike oven-baked fries, this entire recipe takes less than 10 minutes to cook!
- Easy to customize. I purposely kept the seasonings to a minimum to let the natural sweet taste of the potatoes shine, but you can jazz them up any way you like!
You can treat these fries as a side dish and use the air fryer simultaneously to cook the star dish, like air fryer hamburgers or air fryer turkey burgers.
Air fryer sweet potato fries ingredients
Potatoes, spices, and a touch of oil is all that is needed to yield the most crispy fries ever. Here are the recipe specifics:
- Sweet potatoes- I like to start with the largest sweet potato I can find so I can easily slice them into matchsticks to form fries. Smaller ones then to be a little more limiting.
- Olive oil- As mentioned earlier, I like to add a tiny bit of oil to prevent the fries from burning and to maximise the crispiness.
- Spices- Just a simple mix of salt, pepper, and smoked paprika.

How to make sweet potato fries in the air fryer
Step 1- Prep the potatoes. Wash the sweet potatoes to remove any hidden dirt. Peel the potatoes, pat them dry, then cut them into the shape of French fries.
Step 2– Season. Add the freshly cut sweet potatoes in a large mixing bowl, along with the olive oil and seasonings, and mix well.
Step 3- Air fry. Assemble a single layer of seasoned sweet potatoes into the base of an air fryer basket. Allow them to air fry for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Step 4- Repeat then serve. If you have excess potatoes, cook those too. Serve the hot with a dipping sauce for sweet potato fries or your favorite dipping sauce.
Can I make this in the oven?
If you’d like to make oven baked sweet potato fries, simply prepare them as instructed. When ready to bake, place them on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes at 180C/350F, flipping halfway through.
Recipe tips and variations
- Always cook air fryer sweet potato fries in a single layer to allow enough air circulation required to make the fries crispy.
- If you have extra time on hand, soak the fries in cold water for 30 minutes. This removes excess starch and gives the fries a fluffier middle while being crispy on the outside.
- Shake the air fryer basket several times during the cooking process so the fries cook evenly.
- Batch cook the fries if needed. If you overcrowd the air fryer basket, the fries won’t cook evenly and turn out slightly soggy in parts.
- Add a tablespoon of cornstarch to the potatoes to make them super crispy.
