After her retirement, 80-year-old Doris Bender from the United States didn’t know what to do with herself.
Watching television for days provided a bit of enjoyment, but then Doris had a brilliant idea. She started knitting beautiful baby hats and donating them to the infant care center.
In just 3 years, the retiree knitted up to 2,000 of these hats and made headlines in her town. A true record-holding grandmother.
“I just want to stay active,” Doris said in an interview about her unusual hobby. “Even after retirement, I want to stay active. Many women my age turn into lazy and grumpy old ladies, but I think that’s wrong. You should find a hobby that benefits both you and others. For me, knitting baby hats has become a favorite thing.”
Doris admitted she had never knitted children’s clothes before, but she mastered the craft because she had a strong desire to do something interesting and helpful for others.
She sends baby hats to the center in small batches. “When 60 to 80 pieces are ready, I give them to the maternity nurses. For boys, I make cute blue, red, and green hats, and for girls, pink and white ones decorated with flowers and hearts,” said the retiree.
By the way, Doris never distinguished the children who received her generous gifts. However, recently, she met two adorable twins—Alina and Maisie, who received white and pink hats from Doris. Apparently, the retiree is very pleased to have found her calling in helping newborns. A true role model!
