Have you gotten into the habit of throwing your eggshells into household waste? You may not have known that there is much more interesting to do with these natural wastes.
We give you 7 zero waste tips for recycling eggshells.
1 – MAKE A MOISTURIZING FACE MASK
This very economical beauty solution will put glitter in your eyes. Or rather… typos on the face. This simple DIY nourishing mask will allow you to give your face a boost of radiance.
Clean the shells by submerging them in boiling water for at least 5 minutes, then once dry, grind them into a powder. Mix the shells with egg white, then spread it over your face. Leave on for 10 minutes then rinse with clean water.
2 – BLEACH THE LAUNDRY
Another 100% natural grandmother’s tip. To preserve the whiteness of your laundry, all you need is a few eggshells combined with a slice of lemon. Place these ingredients in a closed fabric bag which you place in the drum of your machine, then wash as normal. The shells and lemon will prevent the linen from tarnishing.
3 – CLEAN THE PIPES
To unclog your sink pipes, finely crush eggshells and mix the powder with soap and hot water.
4 – TO GROW BEAUTIFUL AND LARGE TOMATOES
You can place eggshells directly under tomato plants when you transplant them.
And when you see a tomato plant from the previous season reappearing, you can help it grow well by giving it a little natural fertilizer in the form of eggshells.
Adding calcium to tomato plants prevents blossom end rot (which is not a disease, but a disorder created by a calcium imbalance). For the same reason, eggshells are good for squash, peppers, cabbage and also broccoli too.
5 – EGGSHELL POWDER FOR YOUR CHICKENS (OR OTHER ANIMALS)
Add the powder to the laying hens’ food to provide them with calcium. The eggs they lay will be better and more nutritious.
You can also give it to birds, for example, by adding it to their food.
6 – SCRUBE YOUR DIRTY DISHES
Never thought of using eggshells for washing dishes? However, these have no equal for scrubbing kitchen utensils encrusted with dirt! Moreover, some ecological sponges use crushed egg shells to formulate their scratching surface (if not walnut shells). To clean your stained dishes, crush a few eggshells and grind them into powder. Add them to your soapy wash water when washing dishes and scrub. This tip allows you to benefit from a naturally abrasive action without using chemicals.
7 – MAKE THE COFFEE MORE VELVETY
If your roommate (or spouse) is complaining that the coffee is too bitter and you still have a pound of it left in the pantry, try this tried-and-true trick.
Mix with your coffee beans an eggshell that you have previously rinsed in vinegar and water, dried then crumbled. Rich in alkaline calcium carbonate, eggshells help neutralize some of the acidity in coffee.
