Lemon and orange peels can be worth gold when mixed with vinegar. Here’s what they can be used for.
oranges and lemons in jars
On our tables at the end of lunch or dinner, but also for a tasty snack, we use a lot of fruit and most of the time there is always some citrus fruit among them, especially oranges and lemons.
These citrus fruits are very important as they are not only available all year round and therefore not only in certain seasons, but also perfectly suited for any kind of dish.
Lemon and orange peels: why they should never be thrown away
Lemon, in particular, is widely used in both sweet and savoury dishes, as is orange, and is therefore an indispensable ingredient, especially in Italian cuisine, which has turned it into a real treasure.
Orange and lemon peel: that’s why they’re worth gold
Suffice it to say that some types of lemons, such as Sorrento lemons or other types from the Amalfi coast, have become real products of our territory, as have oranges, including the most famous Sicilian ones.
As well as being useful for cooking, these citrus fruits are also an excellent ally for overcoming ailments and strengthening our immune defences, as they contain a lot of Vitamin C.
In fact, a good splash of orange not only strengthens our organism but also helps to easily cure colds and in summer, consumed cold and with ice cubes, it refreshes the palate.
Lemon also has useful properties for our organism. Like the orange, a good lemonade quenches thirst during the hottest months, and can also be useful for digestive or other problems, due to its astringent action.
The method that saves us so much money
But not everyone knows not to throw away any of these citrus fruits, although sometimes we tend to throw away the peels because they are not edible, but they can be used for other purposes.
Although many people break them open, insert them into the dehumidifier or place them on top of the radiator or cooker to ensure that the essential oils release a heady aroma into the surrounding environment, combined with vinegar they can save a lot of money.
By placing lemon and orange peels in a glass jar and sprinkling them with wine vinegar, the whole thing is left to sit for a few days to release all the properties of the peels.
After this time, we can open the jar again and drain it in a container with a strainer, making sure to obtain the vinegar-based liquid and essential oils from the citrus peels.
Put it all in a spray bottle and you will have a natural and ecological degreaser that will leave surfaces such as sinks, basins and any other object shiny and spotless as well as having an unmistakable smell.
The solution can also be used to wash the shower cubicle and its panel and glass which, after a rainy day, show traces of dirt or which have humidity and therefore condensation.
In addition to cleaning thoroughly, lemon and orange as well as vinegar will disinfect the surfaces of germs and bacteria, and we will have saved a lot of money that we would have consumed if we had bought commercial products for these washes.
