Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One director Christopher McQuarrie considered using ‘de-aging’ effects for a scene featuring Julia Roberts. He wanted Roberts to portray the late girlfriend of Tom Cruise’s character in a flashback scene set in 1989. However, McQuarrie ultimately scrapped the idea due to the high cost of the technology. Instead, Mariela Garriga was cast for the role and the scene avoided showing the faces of Cruise and Esai Morales. The film has received positive reviews and has grossed $370.9 million worldwide since its release.
