A retrospective on the 1999 film Shakespeare in Love has revealed that disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein threatened a producer’s family if he didn’t quit. Julia Roberts was initially set to play the lead role, but she dropped out after learning that Daniel Day-Lewis would not be her co-star. The film faced uncertainty until Gwyneth Paltrow convinced Weinstein to buy the script. Weinstein tried to remove one of the producers from the film and threatened him and his family. Despite the turmoil, Shakespeare in Love became a huge success, grossing nearly $300 million and winning seven Academy Awards.
