A Chinese man found himself in a hospital emergency room after engaging in a prolonged kissing session with his girlfriend.

The media outlet reported that the incident, which resulted in the man experiencing a loss of hearing, took place on August 22nd.

The couple was engaged in an extended kiss while on a date at West Lake in China’s eastern Zhejiang province, South China Morning Post reported. During the amorous encounter, the man suddenly felt a sharp pain in his ear, prompting immediate concern.

He was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals made a startling discovery—a perforated eardrum.

He was informed by the doctors that it would take approximately two months for him to make a complete recovery and prescribed antibiotics to facilitate the healing process.

To shed light on the phenomenon, medical experts explained that passionate kissing can induce a rapid alteration in the air pressure within the ear. This, in combination with a partner’s heavy breathing, can create an imbalance leading to a punctured eardrum.

According to the media outlet, this is not the first recorded case of such an incident in China.

In 2008, Reuters reported a similar occurrence when a young woman from southern China experienced partial hearing loss due to her boyfriend accidentally rupturing her eardrum during an excessively fervent kiss.

The woman, in her twenties, hailing from Zhuhai in southern Guangdong province, sought medical attention and arrived at the hospital entirely deaf in her left ear.

This peculiar story has captured the attention of Chinese social media platforms, amassing a remarkable one million likes and 400,000 comments on Douyin alone, according to the South China Morning Post.

Social media users responded with humor and witty remarks, with one individual remarking, “The world is so big that it is home to a myriad of weird things.”

Another online observer humorously noted, “It turns out that love really can deafen the ear with its roar.”

Some even jestingly cited the incident as a reason to abstain from seeking a romantic partner, joking, “This is why I don’t want to find a partner. It’s too dangerous.”
