The battle for freedom of choice in choosing the right medical treatment has come under scrutiny in recent years, and it extends far beyond the mainstream in terms of the decisions being made by patients and doctors behind closed doors.

For Suzanne Somers, a famous, longtime actress who rose to fame through the show ‘Three’s Company’ for her role as Chrissy Snow, choice mattered tremendously when it came time to choose her treatment for breast cancer.

Now 76 years old, Somers’ quest to defeat cancer started when she was diagnosed back in the year 2000, and has continued through countless treatments, both mainstream and alternative.

It all began with a decision to avoid what is considered the most harsh, potentially life-threatening, and controversial treatments in the world — chemotherapy, and has continued into the present day with Somers’ ongoing commitment to a healthy, holistic lifestyle.

Speaking to Yahoo! Life in an interview posted to YouTube four years ago, Somers recalled her surprising cancer diagnosis.

“I’m seeing something suspicious here,” Somers said she was told, along with news that she had a tumor of just over two centimeters.

After undergoing surgery to have the tumor, and the whole bottom part of her breast removed, Somers said she was offered a choice — one that she believes may have saved her life.

“When confronted with the standard treatment protocol for cancer, I actually had an easy time saying no.

“No to chemotherapy, there was a better way for me.”

Somers eventually did undergo radiation therapy, but not chemotherapy and other allopathic treatments that were recommended.

To fill in the gap, she decided to learn as much as she could about alternative therapies, including injections of the Viscum Album plant, also known as mistletoe.

Mistletoe is more popular in Europe, and has been the subject of a fundraiser for clinical trials as a potential cancer treatment, launched by the Olivia Newton-John Foundation.

From Cancer Victim to Natural Health Crusader

Somers almost became a cancer victim for a second time in 2009, when doctors told her that a scan showed her body was riddled with cancer cells.

Instead of panicking, she took it as an opportunity to clean up her environment, and her lifestyle.

Instead of going to bed at 3 a.m. and only getting as little as five hours of sleep, she made sleep a priority.

Somers started doubling down on supplements and holistic health routines, and began to take a closer look at what may have been causing issues.

She also began looking for ways to prevent her body from being exposed to toxins, and discovered black mold in her house that she said was being inhaled into her lungs and causing serious issues.

Later on, she found out that the doctors’ diagnosis was revealed to be incorrect.

It’s just one reason why the former actress turned health advocate and author of dozens of books urges people to educate themselves on their options, and to have the courage to make the choices that are right for them.

In 2020, Somers revealed that she is still cancer-free, and feeling better than ever.

“I don’t look at cancer in my life as a negative,” she said to Prevention Magazine.

Somers wrote a book called ‘Knockout: Interviews with Doctors Who Are Curing Cancer–And How to Prevent Getting It in the First Place’ in 2010, which includes “stunning testimonials from inspirational survivors using alternative treatments.”

In 2016, she followed up with a book called ‘TOX-SICK,’ detailing the importance of avoiding and detoxifying the body from toxic chemicals that are ubiquitous in our environment and daily lives.

And in 2020, she released her 27th book titled ‘A New Way to Age,’ about her tips for prioritizing health and disease prevention at “73 years young.”

Somers’ Top Five Tips for Healthy Aging

According to Somers, the following five tips are helpful for aging gracefully and feeling young for as long as you live.

  1. She Avoids Processed Foods- She starts her day with a green smoothie that includes kale, spinach, apple, and ginger among other produce. For lunch, she chooses some type of lean protein and greens.

Somers likes to cook with a wide variety of healthy spices and oils, and rosemary, olive oil, and garlic marinated lamb is one of her favorite dishes.

  1. She Monitors Her Hormones- Somers is well known for using hormone replacement therapy. She has her hormones tested often to make sure her levels are healthy.

Somers also takes supplements to support hormonal health including B12, magnesium (one of the most essential minerals to balance hormones), Zinc, prebiotics and probiotics.

  1. She Does Yoga Every Other Day- “I will do yoga until the day I die,” Somers said to Prevention.

She practices outside her Arizona home in the sunshine, and goes through deep stretches and movements.

“I’m around some of my friends who are my age or older, and they’re out of gas. I have great energy at this age. It’s great!” she said to the magazine. “But it’s never too late!”

  1. She Has Sex Twice a Day- Somers credits her balanced lifestyle and healthy hormones to her sex life with her husband, Alan Hamel, 86. Her healthy lifestyle has enhanced her sex drive, she said.

“I like the way I look, I like the way I feel, and I like the way I have a healthy libido.”

  1. She Uses Organic Skincare and Hair Products- “The skin is the largest organ in the body, and we put chemicals all over it,” Somers said, adding that she created her an organic, toxin-free skincare line called Suzanne Organics.

Somers also recommends that people listen to their bodies and always do what they feel is right — after doing their research, of course.
